RIM: the tablet PlayBook 4G expected in 2012

RIM

Since the announcement of the tablet playbook, first using the QNX OS as a basis for future BlackBerry platform 10, Research in Motion had planned to launch a version with a 4G modem to complement the model WiFi only.

The launch was originally scheduled for the second half of 2011 but the many difficulties encountered by the manufacturer, with the decline in activity, the collapse of its share price and the internal reorganization that led to the replacement of two co-leaders, have probably somewhat distressed projects.

RIM had no doubt be keen to launch first PlayBook OS 2.0, a major update that has added features whose absence had been criticized for marketing the product. And if there was really a new playbook with modem shelf for months, the project seems to always be current.

The BlackBerry Developer World event in early May of this served mainly to announce the availability of the first tools to develop applications for the future 10 BlackBerry but it also confirmed the sidelines of the conference, the launch of a tablet PlayBook 4G in 2012 (without elaborating).

Few details are available except that it should be basically the same playbook tablet slightly modified to carry a dual core processor 1.5 GHz (1 GHz cons now) and a 4G LTE modem.

It should also have a module NFC (Near Field Communications) for the management of contactless services. The integration of this feature was mentioned by the former co-CEO Jim Balsillie in the early demonstrations of the shelf in October 2010.

You will recall that there are rumors of extending the range in 2012 playbook that evoke a model 7 "comparable to the playbook, but the features reworked (this could be the model) and a display shelf with a 10" compatibility with LTE.
