Google Chrome: new technology for the V8 engine

Google Chrome

Google Chrome already has a reputation as a fast browser, but that was a while since Google had returned by this quality on the front of the stage. This is again done with the V8 engine.

By the next stable version of Google Chrome, the JavaScript engine will use a new algorithm and the ability to decide on a more selective functions to optimize. On the SunSpider benchmark, Chrome 19 (beta) and shows a performance gain of around 25% compared to Google Chrome 18.

Software engineer at Google, says Jakob Kummerow V8 JavaScript executes in two stages. First compiled into machine code no optimization for the generated code. The optimization is reached only later to generate code faster machine. An operation will become more selective.

Previously, V8 stopped every millisecond to analyze the functions running and decide which ones should be optimized. With the new algorithm, V8 "use counters to keep track of how many times the JavaScript functions are called and executed in a program loop."

With this collection of information, V8 ensures that optimizations are made to functions for which it is actually needed.

The performance enhancements are especially sensitive to small JavaScript programs.
